It’s that time of year again. The weather begins getting cooler, the leaves start turning, students return to their classrooms, and it seems like it is pumpkin spice everything, everywhere, all at once. As much as I like spring, fall has to be my favorite time of year. The air feels crisper and it’s a good reason to bring out the duvet to put on the bed.
At Stylecards, we have another wonderful issue for your enjoyment. For this issue we had particular fun with the Designer Showcases. At The Haunted House of Horrors. Sheristrawberri was kind enough to act as the victim for the macabre merchandise, but for the more fashion oriented, we have some of the latest designs from Carol’s Store.
On a more serious note, Sheri delves into the topic of sales events. There are lots of them and they’re all competing for our attention and our Lindens. Sheri looks at the topic from multiple angles, talking with the people who put on the events, creators who like events and those who don’t, and gets thoughts from some people who attend them. It’s a thorough and fascinating look behind-the-scenes of a major part of the Second Life economy.
We also take a look at Physically-Based Rendering (PBR) from a couple of different angles, and include instructions on getting it working in the major viewers. The technology, which started rolling out in late 2023, has the capability of making more realistic reflective surfaces, but has the downside of dropping frame rates and requiring more computing power. It’s here to stay, so we try to help people make the most of it, while still being able to function in SL.
Education is one of the themes for this issue, and with that in mind we travel to two university campuses in Second Life for different looks at education. For people interested in role-playing, we visit St. Elizabeth’s University and get a slice-of-life about what it means to be a student or faculty member at a virtual university. At the other end of the spectrum, we also travel to the venerable Rockcliffe University campus, where real-life educators get together to discuss educational theories and practices found in schools the world over.
On the spookier side, Sheristrawberri also visited Crossroads-1896, Gothic City of New Orleans to meet with vampires, werewolves, and more. Crossroads is an intriguing role-playing sim that combines the lore of the bayou with the stories of creatures of the night.
To top it off, we have four seasonally-appropriate pictorials to take in. We have a collection of school uniforms for women and men heading off to campus, an assortment of cozy outdoor wear suitable for cooler weather, and several Halloween costumes to liven up any ghoulish gathering. In the spirit of the season, we name Wednesday Addams as a Fashion Icon and devote a pictorial to different interpretations of her distinctive look.
